27 (A)Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due,[a]
    when it is in your power to do it.

28 (B)Do not say to your neighbor, “Go, and come again,
    tomorrow I will give it”—when you have it with you.
29 (C)Do not plan evil against your neighbor,
    who (D)dwells trustingly beside you.
30 (E)Do not contend with a man for no reason,
    when he has done you no harm.
31 (F)Do not envy (G)a man of violence
    and do not choose any of his ways,
32 for (H)the devious person is an abomination to the Lord,
    but the upright are (I)in his confidence.
33 (J)The Lord's curse is on the house of the wicked,
    but he (K)blesses the dwelling of the righteous.
34 Toward the (L)scorners he (M)is scornful,
    (N)but to the humble he gives favor.[b]
35 The wise will inherit honor,
    but fools get[c] disgrace.

A Father's Wise Instruction

(O)Hear, O sons, a father's instruction,
    and be attentive, that you may (P)gain[d] insight,
for I give you good (Q)precepts;
    do not forsake my teaching.
When I was a son with my father,
    (R)tender, (S)the only one in the sight of my mother,
he (T)taught me and said to me,
(U)“Let your heart hold fast my words;
    (V)keep my commandments, and live.
(W)Get wisdom; get (X)insight;
    do not forget, and do not turn away from the words of my mouth.
Do not forsake her, and she will keep you;
    (Y)love her, and she will guard you.
(Z)The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom,
    and whatever you get, get (AA)insight.
Prize her highly, and she will exalt you;
    she will (AB)honor you (AC)if you embrace her.
She will place on your head (AD)a graceful garland;
    she will bestow on you a beautiful crown.”

10 (AE)Hear, (AF)my son, and accept my words,
    that (AG)the years of your life may be many.
11 I have (AH)taught you the way of wisdom;
    I have led you in the paths of uprightness.
12 When you walk, (AI)your step will not be hampered,
    and (AJ)if you run, you will not stumble.
13 (AK)Keep hold of instruction; do not let go;
    guard her, for she is your (AL)life.
14 (AM)Do not enter the path of the wicked,
    and do not walk in the way of the evil.
15 Avoid it; do not go on it;
    turn away from it and pass on.
16 For they (AN)cannot sleep unless they have done wrong;
    they are robbed of sleep unless they have made someone stumble.
17 For they eat the bread of wickedness
    (AO)and drink the wine of violence.
18 But (AP)the path of the righteous is like (AQ)the light of dawn,
    which shines (AR)brighter and brighter until (AS)full day.
19 (AT)The way of the wicked is like deep (AU)darkness;
    they do not know over what they (AV)stumble.

God Is Love

Beloved, (A)let us love one another, for love is from God, and (B)whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. (C)Anyone who does not love does not know God, because (D)God is love. In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that (E)God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. 10 In this is love, (F)not that we have loved God (G)but that he loved us and sent his Son to be (H)the propitiation for our sins. 11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 (I)No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and (J)his love is perfected in us.

13 (K)By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. 14 And (L)we have seen and testify that (M)the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of (N)the world. 15 (O)Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. 16 So (P)we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. (Q)God is love, and (R)whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. 17 By this (S)is love perfected with us, so that (T)we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because (U)as he is so also are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love, but (V)perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not (W)been perfected in love. 19 (X)We love because he first loved us. 20 (Y)If anyone says, “I love God,” and (Z)hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot[a] love God (AA)whom he has not seen. 21 And (AB)this commandment we have from him: (AC)whoever loves God must also love his brother.

20 (A)My son, be attentive to my words;
    incline your ear to my sayings.
21 (B)Let them not escape from your sight;
    (C)keep them within your heart.
22 For they are (D)life to those who find them,
    and healing to all their[a] flesh.
23 Keep your heart with all vigilance,
    for (E)from it flow (F)the springs of life.
24 Put away from you (G)crooked speech,
    and put (H)devious talk far from you.
25 (I)Let your eyes look directly forward,

26 (J)Ponder[b] the path of your feet;
    (K)then all your ways will be sure.
27 (L)Do not swerve to the right or to the left;
    turn your foot away from evil.

Warning Against Adultery

(M)My son, be attentive to my wisdom;
    (N)incline your ear to my understanding,
that you may keep (O)discretion,
    and your lips may (P)guard knowledge.
For the lips of (Q)a forbidden[c] woman drip honey,
    and her speech[d] is (R)smoother than oil,
but in the end she is (S)bitter as (T)wormwood,
    (U)sharp as (V)a two-edged sword.
Her feet (W)go down to death;
    her steps follow the path to[e] Sheol;
she (X)does not ponder the path of life;
    her ways wander, and she does not know it.

And (Y)now, O sons, listen to me,
    and do not depart from the words of my mouth.
Keep your way far from her,
    and do not go near the door of her house,
lest you give your honor to others
    and your years to the merciless,
10 lest strangers take their fill of your strength,
    and your (Z)labors go to the house of a foreigner,
11 and at the end of your life you (AA)groan,
    when your flesh and body are consumed,
12 and you say, (AB)“How I hated discipline,
    and my heart (AC)despised reproof!
13 I did not listen to the voice of my teachers
    or incline my ear to my instructors.
14 (AD)I am at the brink of utter ruin
    in the assembled congregation.”

Whose Son Is the Christ?

35 (A)And as (B)Jesus taught in the temple, he said, “How can the scribes say that (C)the Christ is the son of David? 36 David himself, (D)in the Holy Spirit, declared,

(E)“‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at my right hand,
    until I put your enemies (F)under your feet.”’

37 David himself calls him Lord. So (G)how is he his son?” And the great throng (H)heard him gladly.

Beware of the Scribes

38 (I)And in his teaching he said, “Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes and like greetings in the marketplaces 39 and have the best seats in the synagogues and (J)the places of honor at feasts, 40 (K)who devour widows' houses and (L)for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.”

The Widow's Offering

41 (M)And he sat down opposite (N)the treasury and watched the people (O)putting money into the offering box. Many rich people put in large sums. 42 And a poor widow came and put in two (P)small copper coins, which make a penny.[a] 43 And he called his disciples to him and said to them, “Truly, I say to you, (Q)this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the offering box. 44 For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her (R)poverty has put in everything she had, all (S)she had to live on.”

Jesus Foretells Destruction of the Temple

13 (T)And as he came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher, what wonderful stones and what wonderful buildings!” And Jesus said to him, “Do you see these great buildings? (U)There will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.”

Signs of the End of the Age

And as he sat on (V)the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, (W)Peter and James and John and (X)Andrew asked him (Y)privately, “Tell us, (Z)when will these things be, and what will be the sign when all these things are about to be accomplished?” And Jesus began to say to them, (AA)“See that no one leads you astray. (AB)Many will come in my name, saying, (AC)‘I am he!’ and they will lead many astray. And when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, (AD)do not be alarmed. This (AE)must take place, but the end is not yet. For (AF)nation will rise against nation, and (AG)kingdom against kingdom. There will be (AH)earthquakes in various places; there will be (AI)famines. These are but the beginning of the birth pains.

(AJ)“But (AK)be on your guard. For they will deliver you over to councils, and you will be beaten (AL)in synagogues, and you will stand before (AM)governors and (AN)kings for my sake, (AO)to bear witness before them. 10 And the gospel must first be proclaimed (AP)to all nations. 11 And when they bring you to trial and deliver you over, (AQ)do not be anxious beforehand what you are to say, but say (AR)whatever is given you in that hour, (AS)for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit. 12 (AT)And brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death. 13 (AU)And you will be hated by all for my name's sake. (AV)But the one who endures to the end will be saved.
